Five years ago, on the morning of December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.15 undersea earthquake off the coast of Indonesia’s island of Sumatra, triggered a series of tsunamis that charged across the Indian Ocean.

The surging waves hit the shores of 13 countries. An estimated 230,000 people lost their lives and 1.8 million were displaced. In an overwhelming response to World Vision New Zealand’s subsequent tsunami appeal, generous Kiwis donated almost NZ$5 million to help survivors.
